OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide adult learning with an opportunity to acquire or develop their skills base.
  • To market, co-ordinate and administer the short learning programmes offered by the various Faculties of the Nelson Mandela University.
  • To provide a course verification service.

DEFINITIONS:

For the purpose of this document, and for the management of short learning programmes at the Nelson Mandela University, the definitions as formulated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) will apply. The term "Short Learning Programme" as used by SAQA, is a collective noun to describe skills programmes and short courses.not, and is inclusive of skills programmes, credit-bearing short courses and non-credit-bearing short courses.

SHORT LEARNING PROGRAMME (SLP):

The term Short Learning Programme describes any short programme, whether credits are awarded or not, and is inclusive of skills programmes, credit-bearing short courses and non-credit-bearing short courses.

SKILLS PROGRAMME:

A skills programme is occupationally based and when completed will constitute credits towards a qualification registered on the NQF. Provisioning is undertaken by a training provider accredited by an ETQA (Skills Development Act No.97 of 1998).  A skills programme is a type of short learning programme.

SHORT COURSE:

A Short course is a type of short learning programme through which a learner may or may not be awarded credits depending on the purpose of the programme.

VISION:

Our vision as a unit is to be a centre which contributes and enables adult learning with opportunities to study via the Short Learning Programmes (SLP) model and in so doing assist individuals to grow.

MISSION:

The unit provides a one stop centre for the enabling of adult learning via short learning programmes (SLP's).
