Basic Food Hygiene Training for Food Handlers

COURSE INFORMATION

The South African listeriosis crisis in 2017/2018, together with increased consumer awareness, has sharpened the focus on hygiene and safety in the food production, handling and service industry.

Regulation 638 Regulations governing general hygiene requirements for food premises, the transport of food and related matters, which was promulgated in June 2018, makes it compulsory for all persons-in-charge of food premises to either be suitably qualified or otherwise trained in the principles and practices of food safety and hygiene.  This training must be accredited or conducted by an inspector.  In addition, other people working on the food premises must also be either suitably qualified or adequately trained.
The Environmental Health Department at Nelson Mandela University is proud to present two Basic Food Hygiene short learning programmes – one aimed at persons-in-charge of food handling facilities and one aimed at basic food handlers – to fulfil the above training requirement.
Both training courses cover the basic principles and practices of food safety and hygiene.
The Basic Food Hygiene Training for Food Handlers course also details the duties of a food handler, as set out in R638.
In addition, the Food Hygiene Training for the Person in Charge (P.I.C)course covers all the requirements of R638 in detail.  Persons-in-charge will be furnished with an extensive manual which includes templates of all required documentation and records.
Both courses contain exercises and practical examples to empower learners to apply the required food safety practices in their workplace
